Follow this free crochet pattern to learn how to crochet a colorful and extra large granny square blanket. A perfect crochet blanket for any season.

 

There’s nothing that will light up a room quite like a super colorful crochet blanket. I’ve crocheted dozens of blankets over the years but this one makes my heart and eyes so happy everytime I see it!

Crochet Granny Square Blanket Pattern

Materials:

  • Size J 6mm Clover Crochet Hook https://amzn.to/3l8B21x
  • Tapestry Needle https://amzn.to/3weibbD

 Crochet Stitches Used (US Terms)

  • MC= Magic Circle (If you are unfamiliar with a magic circle please watch the free video tutorial that goes with this pattern)
  • SS= Slip Stitch
  • CH= Chain
  • SC= Single Crochet
  • HDC= Half Double Crochet
  • DC= Double Crochet
  • TRC= Triple Crochet
  • trc2tog= Triple Crochet 2 Together

 

Crochet Granny Square

Make 35 squares

Use your J hook and turquoise yarn

Round 1: 

  • Start with a MC
  • CH 4 (counts as a TRC)
  • 11 TRC into MC (counts as 12 TRC with the CH 4)
  • SS into top of CH 4
  • Fasten Off

 

Round 2:

  • Join Pink Yarn in-between any TRC from round 1
  • CH 2 + 1 TRC in same space (counts as a trc2tog)
  • CH 3
  • (trc2tog + CH 3) 11 times in remaining spaces between TRC from round 1
  • SS above first trc2tog
  • Fasten off 

Round 3

  • Join Blue Yarn into any CH 3 space from round 2
  • CH 2 + 2 DC in same space ( counts as 3 DC total)
  • CH 2
  • 3 DC into each of the next 11 CH 3 spaces from round 2 (12 clusters of 3 DC + CH 2 total)
  • SS into top of CH 2 space, Fasten Off

Round 4:

  • Join Minty into any CH 2 space from round 3
  • CH 3 + 1 TRC ( counts as 1 trc2tog) 
    CH 2 + 1 trc2tog all in same space, CH 2
  • *1 trc2tog + CH 2 + 1 trc2tog with CH 2, 11 more times (* in each CH 2 space from previous round, 12 total clusters)

 

Round 5:

  • Attach Dark purple yarn into center of any V (trc2tog + CH2 +trc2tog) from previous round
  • CH 3 + 2 TRC into same space (counts as 3 TRC) 
  • 3 DC into each of the next 5 CH 2 space from round 4 ( total of 5 clusters of 3 DC)
  • 3 TRC + CH2 + 3 TRC into next CH 2 space
  • 3 DC into each of the next 5 CH 2 spaces
  • 3 TRC + CH2 + 3 TRC into next CH 2 space
  • 3 DC into next 5 CH 2 spaces
  • 3 TRC + CH 2 + 3 TRC into next CH 2 space 
  • 3 DC into next 5 CH 2 spaces
  • 3 TRC + CH 2 into same V you started in (with the original 3 TRC this will finish off your first corner)
  • SS into top of first CH 3
  • Fasten off

Rounds 6-10

  • The next 5 rounds will be worked as a traditional granny square, changing colors for each round.
  • Attach Orange into any corner space from previous round
  • CH 2 + 2 DC into same corner space (this is only part of your corner, you will finish this corner when you finish this round)
  • 3 DC into each space along row (same for every row)
  • 3 DC + CH 2 + 3 DC into corner CH 2 space (same for every corner)
  • 3 DC + CH 2 into unfinished corner ( this is the same corner where you started this round)
  • SS into top of CH 2 space
  • Fasten off

Continue working each round the same with Lilac, green, yellow and red.
